20 Years of Collection Enrichment

In 1998, the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac inherited the collections of the musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie and the ethnographic collections of the musée de l’Homme, amounting to some 300,000 objects. It has since developed an acquisition policy that has amassed 78,000 pieces and photographs.
The exhibition and its catalogue take the public behind the scenes of a collection. This publication provides an opportunity to understand the multiple stages, processes and guidelines behind these forward-looking acquisitions: expanding this collection means building on an overall history of art, where the historic aspect finds a resonance in contemporary issues.
